I complained so much about math back in the day. I have always been into creativity, so it was very hard for me to wrap my head around the idea that some problems only have one unique answer. It truly frustrated me to spend hours trying to figure those rules out, to get to many close paths over and over again. My friends helped, I got tutors, and I even was constantly asking my teachers for extra credit. I admit I was a grade-obsessed kid, and that’s on me. But what frustrated me the most is how incapable I felt. I was a straight A student in every other subject, so to admit that I wasn’t doing great at math was like admitting I had failed. For all of you who feel me, you know how awful it is to start to think of yourself as not such a smart person.
At some point, I basically gave up. The good old “Whelp, I guess I’m just not fit for this, so I shouldn’t even try” mentality. I was not even surprised when I got bad grades in math finals anymore. That is, until I stopped getting bad grades. That was the real surprise right there.

One day, I walked into that classroom ready to be disappointed as usual, and got handed a paper that was going to be graded. I was more than ready to have those questions completely fly over my head. And that’s when the craziest thing happened. It felt easy to answer them. It was like suddenly something in my brain clicked, and step after step started to make sense. I got those answers in the first 15 minutes, and I am still proud of that moment in my life. Turns out, because I had been trying so hard and studying in so many different ways, something in my brain was starting to develop; even when I thought I was completely done with it. Math had not been that clear since my mathlete ages in primary school (yes, I know, it’s hard to believe).

After that unexpected ray of mathematic hope, I started to see those classes differently. Don’t get me wrong, they were still very hard, especially when statistics made a guest appearance in them, but I wasn’t angry at math anymore. For the first time, I understood what people who love math saw in it. I saw, from that moment on, a world that was also filled with creativity; just not in the conventional way. I now think that math class is a metaphor for life itself. Sometimes you gotta keep calm and let the numbers fall into the right place in the formula before everything starts to make sense. Also, it doesn’t hurt to ease your worries with great internet comedy made by people who, like us, are waiting for math class to get easier. It’ll happen, my friends; take it from me. I used to paint pictures in my math final papers, and now I do some equations when I’m bored. Life did take a turn indeed.
